Elizabeth Johnston is an LCSW looking to bring her talents and skills to the McLean County Board. She is dedicated to ensuring McLean County is a thriving community. Issues she will be focusing on include: ensuring fiscal responsibility, maintaining reliable roads and infrastructure, improving the welfare of all county residents, and continuing to build positive economic growth.
The Issues that Matter to You, Matter to Me.
The County Board needs to communicate more consistently and openly with residents, and make it easier for residents to communicate their views to the Board. Moving County Board meetings to the evening, so residents can attend without taking time off from work, would increase transparency, community input, and accountability.
To reduce property taxes local government needs a 3-prong approach: efficiency & innovation to contain costs while maintaining high quality services; resist unfunded State mandates that impose the cost of State programs on local government; and push for economic development that brings in new small and mid-size businesses to increase the tax base, which helps shift the property tax burden from private home owners
The County Board is the most comprehensive unit of local government and should help lead regional strategies to address community needs, as well as economic development issues and opportunities. Communication, collaboration and cooperation are necessary to ensure sustainable growth. McLean County historically has been the county that works and can continue to be the County to watch in the coming years.

I’m endorsing Elizabeth Johnson to be a member of the McLean County Board, because I believe she’s one of the best candidates for the board in recent memory. Elizabeth became highly informed on the issues, structure and personnel of the county board by faithfully attending full county board meetings, dozens of its committee meetings and meeting personally with 18 county board department heads. She’s also introduced herself to elected officials in Bloomington and Normal because she knows how important it is for county board members to work effectively with other governments situated within the county. Elizabeth is a licensed clinical social worker, which will make her a valuable addition to numerous issues facing the county board in areas such as mental health services, children and family services, affordable housing and criminal justice programs such as drug court and mental health court. Elizabeth will be an extremely effective board member.

What does one expect from an elected official? Hopefully someone who asks intelligent questions, seeks solutions, has a strong conscience and who listens well. If these are the ideal qualities, I would highly recommend the election of Elizabeth Johnston in McLean County Board District 5. Elizabeth asks first and gathers her information. Although she is not a union member, she reached out to me with questions about her auto purchase, solar installation and other concerns, as she wanted to maximize her spending power to ensure that local and American workers benefited. She went the extra mile and was willing to spend her dollars ethically. Elizabeth is quiet, but not afraid. She listens and researches before she acts. In her one finds a young woman with clear intelligence and morals. I would commend her to District 5’s voters.

I encourage voters in McLean County Board District 5 to join me in voting for Elizabeth Johnston. I’ve believed for some time we need new leadership on the county board. I was thrilled when I learned Elizabeth was running to represent District 5. I’ve never met a better, more qualified candidate. Elizabeth knows the county and understands the issues. She will lead with integrity and compassion. She is collaborative and creative, which will serve her well as she seeks solutions and addresses constituent concerns. Elizabeth believes local government needs to be more accessible, accountable and transparent, and she will work to make board meetings easier to attend and information easier to access. Please join me in electing Elizabeth Johnston to the McLean County Board. She is the kind of leader we need, and the kind of leader I am proud to support and will be proud to have represent me.

I want Pantagraph readers to know what Elizabeth "Lizzy" Johnston has done recently for this community to show that she has the qualities necessary to serve on the McLean County Board, District 5. She worked diligently to raise awareness and support for the Equal Rights Amendment (which finally passed on May 30, 2018); is chair of the Normal Community High School Promise Council (which supports children and families); is a parent volunteer of Grove Elementary and Chiddix Jr. High; and she visited mental health clinics locally to see what services are provided. She attends the meetings of the county board, taking notes on the issues and the positions held by members. She has met with most of the county officials/staff from the departments comprising county government. Lizzy is a dynamo for understanding and acting. We need Lizzy on the McLean County board, District 5.

Most voters pay significant attention to either state or national elections while too many voters overlook local elections which directly affect their community and their wallets. On Nov. 6, residents in McLean County District 5 have the opportunity to vote for an extraordinary local woman to represent them: Elizabeth “Lizzy” Johnston. I support Lizzy for advocating these changes: highlighting the impact of county board decisions and the role it plays; affirming the importance of transparency and accountability of the board and assuring the board works collaboratively with other local governments. Lizzy Johnston has the smarts, wherewithal, energy, perseverance and integrity to serve the county board successfully.

McLean County is lucky to have so many people willing to run for office this year, but we need candidates and elected officials that do more than just put their name on the ballot as justification for being elected. I have been impressed with the diligence and hard work of Elizabeth Johnston, who is running in County Board District 5. Elizabeth wants county government to be more open and accessible, as well as to see the county grow in a sustainable way that utilizes county resources and manpower but doesn’t increase our property taxes. Elizabeth is running because she cares about the people who live in McLean County and wants what is best for our community. On Nov. 6, vote Elizabeth Johnston for County Board District 5.

I am writing this letter to support Elizabeth Johnston for McLean County Board. As a mental health therapist, I have listened and watched carefully as McLean County has tried to address our services to some of the most needy. My suggestions have gone unheeded. Elizabeth has the knowledge, experience and voice to advance much needed change in the community as a whole. And she has the platform to be heard. Vote. Vote. Vote. And support Elizabeth.

I wholeheartedly endorse Elizabeth (Liz) Johnston for McLean County Board District 5. As a person she is thoughtful, dedicated and dependable. As a candidate, she has prepared herself for office through months of research, learning, meeting with county departments and attending many county committee and regular board meetings. As a board member, I see her there. She is already connecting constituents to government by providing detailed information about meetings and issues. Liz knows our community, understands the struggles of everyday people and is prepared to lead McLean County into the future. She knows our challenges. She proposes realistic, detailed, innovative and well thought out positions and plans of action to improve people’s lives, the local economy and the county’s financial position. Liz brings problem solving and a vision to the McLean County Board and that is why she has my unqualified support.

I would like to urge voters living in McLean County Board District 5 to cast their vote for Elizabeth Johnston. She is exceptionally well-qualified and, if elected, will hit the ground running. When Elizabeth Johnston came to our door she immediately stressed how important it was to vote in the Nov. 6 election. During our conversation we were impressed with her working knowledge of the responsibilities of the McLean County Board. She hadn’t just read reports, but had personally visited most county departments. As a professional licensed clinical social worker, she already understands the importance of collaboration, diversity, stability, transparency and accountability. Additionally, she knows the importance of looking forward and addressing community and economic challenges of our ever-changing society. She also understands that cooperation with other working entities enhances the outcomes for all. Elizabeth Johnston believes that it is county government’s responsibility to weave a tapestry that meets the present and growing needs of a vibrant community while listening to the constituency’s ideas and concerns. Please join us in electing Elizabeth as our District 5 representative to the McLean County Board.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Lizzy Johnston, candidate for McLean County Board District 5, for the past several years. Other letters have talked about Lizzy’s qualifications for office. I want to describe Lizzy’s traits as a person that make her a superb candidate for the board. She’s smart, astute and caring. She has empathy for those who struggle with illnesses and anxieties, and will work to see that county government does what it can to help. She means what she says. She’ll be diligent in doing her homework and she’ll follow through when she says she will. She wants a personal face to government. She’s been out canvassing since the day she announced to meet her constituents. She is a good listener and a good speaker. She knows the value of being prepared, and by having a strong voice on behalf of her constituents and the overall good of our community.

We support Elizabeth Johnston’s campaign to become a District 5 Representative to the McLean County Board. She will contribute fresh perspectives to board decision-making. One of her goals is to ensure continued responsible management of county resources, particularly in times of limited supply. Another goal is to maintain and enhance the infrastructure of the county so the people who use its roads, bridges and other structures can trust in their safety. Finally, Elizabeth recognizes McLean County has assets that enable its citizens to experience high quality of life. We share her desire to find ways to grow and magnify these assets so current residents, businesses, employers and service providers want to remain in the county and new ones want to establish themselves here for the long-term. Her values of interdependence, cooperation, efficiency and transparency match ours. In November, Elizabeth has our vote and, hopefully, yours as well.

Responsible leadership is more than a matter of proclaiming red or proclaiming blue. It’s a matter of building dialogue across the community, researching issues (both problems and opportunities), and working to craft policies that lead us forward and build services that improve the day to day quality of life. This is the responsible leadership Elizabeth Johnston, District 5 candidate for McLean County Board, is committed to delivering, and she has the character and depth of preparation to do so. I urge you to research her positions. She’s earned my vote. I think she’ll earn yours as well.

I’m writing in support of Elizabeth Johnston for County Board, District 5. "All politics are local" the saying goes. November in McLean County isn’t about partisanship, but rather a challenge to think critically about who represents your loved ones’ interests. Elizabeth supports sustainable growth; sound ways to keep our property taxes manageable, and a view to the long-term. Even better, Elizabeth stands for direct representation, meaning when an issue arises in District 5, Elizabeth will take your call and be responsive. I think no matter where you stand on the ideological aisle of politics, it’s an extremely important time for candidate-vetting, on how their views align with our/your priorities, pocketbooks and hopes for prosperity. I’ve supported candidates from both parties in the past and responsive local government is a must. Look no further than Elizabeth Johnston for District 5 on November 6th.
Erik Bush, NormalSeptember 18, 2018
Elizabeth Johnston is approachable, knowledgeable, level-headed and is dedicated to our collective well being. She listens to others; she considers various viewpoints looking for areas of agreement that allow for people to collaborate, with the best of everyone in mind. Elizabeth will represent all residents, and do so with the positive temperament and composure needed to find common ground and make progress. We will all benefit from her goals of the board communicating more consistently and openly with residents, as well as making it easier for residents to communicate views to the board. Let’s support Elizabeth’s commitment to board objectives of increased transparency, community input and accountability. Please vote for Elizabeth Johnston for McLean County District 5 representative.
